Top Gun: Maverick on Paramount+ debuted worldwide on the streaming service.
“The runaway success of this film across theatrical, digital, and now streaming is an undeniable indicator of the effectiveness of Paramount’s multi-platform release strategy,” said Brian Robbins, President and Chief Executive Officer of Paramount Pictures and Chief Content Officer, Movies and Kids & Family for Paramount+. “Across all of our 2022 films, and most recently with Top Gun: Maverick, our studio has uncovered the importance of variable windowing that streaming brings to enhance a film’s overall success.”
The sequel starring Tom Cruise, which had already grossed $1.48 billion at the box office, has now shattered the global record for the most watched movie premiere on the site.
Between December 22 and Christmas Day (December 25), Maverick shattered records as the most-watched domestic movie premiere ever for the service, exceeding the previous record, held by Sonic the Hedgehog 2 by 60 percent. In addition, the film’s popularity increased viewership of the original Top Gun picture by approximately 400% and of the Mission Impossible franchise films on the service by more than 140%.
Tanya Giles, Chief Programming Officer, Paramount Streaming, remarked, “We are happy to see the film’s huge record-breaking success continue by making it the most-watched film premiere on Paramount+.” “We continue to profit from the highly anticipated theatrical hits from Paramount Pictures that are added to the service, giving fans a new option to watch and re-watch their favorite films.”
Maverick is the highest-grossing US domestic release in the history of Paramount Pictures and the first film to achieve number one at the box office for both the Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays.
